We were awarded the commission to develop the master planning and expansion of the Defence Academy, at Shrivenham, following a design competition. The Defence Academy provides technical and management training for Officers across the three Armed Forces.
The project involved the extension and refurbishment of the existing facilities to encompass new courses and methods of training. The brief required the consolidation of the disparate elements of the site into a unified masterplan, as well as developing an architectural strategy for future expansion. Integral to the project was the design of several new buildings and the sensitive refurbishment of the historically significant building stock.
A key addition was the Management Training Centre; this facility provides short term residential courses for high level Officers. It is situated outside the secure perimeter, in a Grade II listed house, set in a mature landscape. Associated with the Centre is a Single Living Accommodation block for course attendees.
The new build office complex, serving as the Headquarters of the Defence Academy, provides the focal point of the Academy masterplan. Alongside this are provided; two new build residential blocks for officers, each accommodating 250 personnel; refurbished mess facilities for Sergeants and SNCO’s, along with new build Living Accommodation; and the Defence Capability Centre, which houses flexible training facilities.
