68 King William Street, City of London

Client: London & Regional
Location: London, EC4
Value: £18m

This prominent site at the head of London Bridge became the first new department store in the City for 100 years, with the lower ground and first four floors let to House of Fraser.

80% of the existing building was demolished but the entire outer shell and Portland stone façade was retained. Five storeys of office accommodation were added above the 4th floor behind the ‘stretched' stone façade. A new pedestrian link through to the department store from the tube was built at lower ground level.

Although the building itself is not listed, it is within a Conservation Area and adjacent to the Grade I listed St Clement's Church. The combination of the complexity of the existing building structure and restricted nature of the site gave the team a number of interesting construction and buildability issues to overcome.
